The school, as a music college, was founded in 1857, which makes it the oldest university in Baden-Wuerttemberg region and the fourth oldest music university in Germany. In the XIX century, the acting classes were introduced into the curriculum, but first after the Second World War the actions were taken to separate the whole new theatre department. In 1963 the division into departments was made and the school changed its name into State University of Music and Performing Arts. Figure Theatre Department, established by Albrecht Roser and Werner Knoedgen in 1983, is one of the first puppetry schools in Western Europe. The University’s Bachelor degree course in puppetry and animation examines what Contemporary Puppetry is today and what it can potentially become tomorrow. Given the classic and traditional animation techniques of figure and puppetry theatre the Stuttgart University is developing their own method. Young, creative direction team with Stephanie Rinke, Julika Mayer and Florian Feisel is putting this tradition in contemporary context. The studies in Stuttgart are characterized by artistic autonomy and individual accountability of each student. They give a solid background in a wide variety of skills, which should provide them with necessary tools to succeed. The course also includes both, traditional and contemporary animation techniques. The Bachelor degree course in puppetry and animation trains the students in: object theatre, puppetry, material theatre and film. The regular duration of the studies comprises 8 semesters.

NIEOGRANICZONY OKTET SMYCZKOWO-SZNURKOWY /
THE UNLIMITED STRING OCTET ORCHESTRA
Reżyseria i scenografia / Direction and scenography: Frank Soehnle
Muzyka / Music: Różne utwory / Diverse compositions
Występują / Performers: Sarah Wissner, Julia Jung, Carmen Jung, Anika Herzberg, Cèlia Legaz-Soler, Tanja Höhne, Helga Lazar
Pod reżyserską opieką Franka Soehnle, studenci trzeciego roku stworzyli lalkowe show łączące dialog z utworami muzycznymi. Studenci sami zbudowali lalki pod opieką Michaela Mordo, jednego z najwybitniejszych konstruktorów marionetek w Niemczech (kontynuującego tradycję Albrechta Rosera). Mimo iż każda lalka ma inny charakter i rodzaj ekspresji scenicznej, Frank Soehnle znalazł sposób, by połączyć działanie wszystkich lalek tworząc fantastyczne przedstawienie, w którym każda scena jest
kontynuacją poprzedniej.

Under the direction of Frank Soehnle the 3rd year students created a string puppet show under the task of performing etudes linking dialogue with a piece of music. The students built the puppets by themselves under the guidance of Michael Mordo, one of the most famous string puppet creators in Germany in the tradition of Albrecht Roser. Though each puppet has a different character and expression, Frank Soehnle found an interesting way to create a wonderful performance, in which each scene is entangled in to the other.

Etiudy studentów pierwszego i trzeciego roku prezentują „manifest dotyczący współczesnego lalkarstwa”, prowadząc dialog ideologiczny między animatorem a obiektem. Ciemna trullala jest wypowiedzią kobiety, którą – w jej własnym koszmarze – odwiedza Punch. Przedstawienie To nie boli, gdy latasz to pokaz teatru fizycznego z użyciem kamieni.

The etudes of the 1st and 3rd year students present “a manifest of contemporary puppetry”, by conducting an ideological dialogue between performer and the object. The dark trullala is a one woman performance, in which Punch is visiting her in her own nightmare. The performance It’s not hurtful to fly is a scene of physical theatre with stones.
